  • Medics teach life-saving techniques

    PDF Print E-mail

081223_A_1026W_001.jpgBAGRAM AIR FIELD, Afghanistan (December 28, 2008) – Working with the Afghan National Army soldiers 16 hours a week, the medics with 3rd Brigade Combat Team, 1st Infantry Division, are providing instruction on a multitude of crucial life-saving techniques.

Spanning through first aide and beyond, the training seems difficult, but the Afghans’ enthusiasm helps the medics guide their students through its challenges.

“We taught them Tactical Combat Casualty Care (TC3), what you might refer to as the ‘medic’s Bible,’” said Sgt. Troy Galvan, a medic with the 201st Brigade Support Battalion.  “We try to use that as a foundation for these guys, because if they can do all the stuff in TC3 then they should be able to sustain life.”

The instruction parallels the Combat Lifesaver course every U.S. Soldier is required complete, but the training medics are providing moves beyond the limits of CLS, covering skill sets commonly found among Emergency Medical Technicians in the U.S.

“The training is exactly the same thing U.S. Soldiers receive, but as medics we can go into the EMT aspect of certain things. It consists of a lot of stuff … anything you can think of that can happen out there, we’re teaching them,” Galvan said. “We can do a lot more IV [Intravenous solution] therapy or traction splints, things you would never do in CLS.”

By the end of the course, the ANA Soldiers will have learned an invaluable skill set: saving a life. After the long days of training and strenuous lessons, Galvan says he has the utmost faith in his students’ ability to perform.

“I think we’re contributing a lot to the future of Afghanistan,” Galvan said. “If I can do a little part in training these guys, I’ll do that, and I’ll keep doing it until we leave here.”

  • Change of Pace for TF Warrior SECFOR

    PDF Print E-mail

081210_A_XXXXX_034.jpgBAGRAM AIR FIELD, Afghanistan (December 18, 2008) – After an increase in robberies and other insurgent activities in parts of Bamyan province, a team from 1st  Maneuver Enhancement Brigade’s Security Force took on a new mission and joined forces with the New Zealand Provincial Reconstruction Team and Afghan National Police to conduct combat patrols and searches in several areas of the province.

The security force, called SECFOR, normally provides transportation for key and essential personnel throughout the area of operations, but for the last couple of weeks they conducted offensive operations in conjunction with other elements of the brigade as well as the PRT and ANP, said Task Force Warrior and 1st MEB Deputy Commander Lt. Col. Stephen Jeselink.

“There had been a couple recent robberies along the Shibar Pass which runs along the boundary of Bamyan and Parwan provinces,” said 1st Lt. Brian Capra, SECFOR officer in charge, who implemented numerous vehicle check-points and static observation posts throughout Shibar Valley.

SECFOR also conducted patrols along the Gandak Highway, which runs along the territory where Hungarians conduct operations in Baghlan province.

“The operation targeted insurgents known to traffic weapons and explosives used to conduct attacks against innocent civilians, GIRoA and Coalition forces,” said Jeselink, who reported the operation as successful and without incident.

Coalition forces established more of a presence to dissuade criminal activity and deny the enemy freedom of movement.  In addition, relationships were established with local villagers.

“Afghan people were very generous,” said Capra, explaining how village elders allowed troops to stay overnight in village schoolhouses as they travelled throughout the territory.

SECFOR also distributed radios and handed out other humanitarian aid as they conducted patrols.
